Rings and Patches as Contraception

What are some non-oral hormonal contraceptives?

There are couple of a non-oral contraceptives. There is a transdermal patch called Evra, and a vaginal ring called NuvaRing/Haloette.

What is in the patch and ring?

The patch and the ring contain a combination of estrogen and a progestin.

How do I use the Evra patch?

It is applied once a week, for 3 weeks, then removed for 1 week before repeating the cycle. It should be applied to the abdomen, arm or buttocks. Do not apply it to your chest or breasts.

Help! My patch fell off! What do I do?

If your patch becomes loose, lifts off or falls off for > 24 hours, then you must apply a new patch.  If it has been less than 24 hours, you can re-apply the same patch ASAP.

I forgot to take my patch off! Am I still protected?

Studies have shown that the patch maintains it's effectiveness up to 9 days of use.

How do I use the contraceptive ring?

It is inserted in the vagina to remain in place continuously for 3 weeks.

Help! My ring fell out! What should I do?

If it has been less than 3 hours, rinse the ring with cool to lukewarm water and re-inserted ASAP.

Help! I forgot to take my contraceptive ring out! Am I still protected?

Studies have shown that the effectiveness of the contraceptive ring can last up to 4 weeks.
