There are two types of morning after pills
Progestin containing pills
- These pills have a single dose of levonorgestrel that can prevent pregnancy. It is most effective within 24 hours of unprotected sex but can be taken up to 5 days later. they are available without a prescription
- Recommended BMI is less than 25 for best effectiveness
Ullipristal acetate
- This pill is available by prescription only and is more effective for those with higher BMIs and has greater effectiveness over a longer period of time after unprotected sex (up to 5 days). it may be less effective in those with a BMI over 30
